LI BLUEGRASS FESTIVAL FIDDLE KIDS
This year’s Long Island Bluegrass Festival will feature a return performance of the LI Bluegrass Festival FIDDLE KIDS! The group was conceptualized by Bill Ayasse, an elementary and middle school music teacher in the Northport, NY school district. It consists of students aged 10 to 14 who belong to the fiddle club at Bellerose Avenue School in the Northport school district, and other youth players from around Long Island.
“Playing Bluegrass gives kids the opportunity to play in an ensemble where they have to listen and react to the other players in real time, rather than reading from a script. It also helps us keep the Bluegrass genre alive by exposing the next generation of musicians to American Roots Music.”
Bluegrass, which borrows from Blues, traditional Appalachian, and Irish/Celtic music, takes some musical chops to play well. “It exposes kids to a lot of different musical configurations that they might not hear in the classroom,” says Ayasse.
This year’s group will include kids playing fiddle, mandolin, bass, and guitar.
The LI Bluegrass Festival Fiddle Kids will take the Main Stage at 2:15PM
